Favicon Generator
One square image in, every favicon a site needs out: a real multi-size .ico for browsers and search results, plus the PNG sizes phones and PWA manifests ask for. Resized and packed entirely in your browser.
Downscaled per size, not once
The cheap way to make a favicon set is to shrink once and re-save; the result is a muddy 16 px icon, because detail that survives at 512 turns to soup at 16. This tool renders each target size from the original independently, which is the whole visible difference between icon sets that look sharp in a tab bar and ones that look like dust.
The .ico container itself is written byte by byte in the page — a directory of sizes with embedded PNGs, the modern form every browser since 2011 reads — so what you download is exactly one file, ready for the site root.
Frequently asked questions
Why does favicon.ico still matter?
Because things you do not control ask for it by name: older browsers, RSS readers, corporate proxies and — importantly — search engines, which fetch /favicon.ico for the icon beside your result. The .ico here carries 16, 32 and 48 px versions in one file, each downscaled separately so the 16 px one stays crisp.
Which PNG sizes do I actually need?
Three cover reality: 180 px as apple-touch-icon for iOS home screens, and 192 + 512 px for the web app manifest Android and install prompts read. The HTML snippet below the previews wires all of them in.
What makes a good favicon source?
A square image with one bold shape and little text — at 16 px, words become noise. Start from at least 512×512; scaling down keeps quality, scaling up invents pixels. Transparent background survives into every generated size.
Do I need an SVG favicon too?
Nice to have, not required: modern browsers accept an SVG icon that adapts to dark tabs, but every one of them also falls back to the files made here. Ship these first; add the SVG when your logo has a clean vector.
