The table nobody types by hand
Markdown tables are the format's least ergonomic corner: every row is one line of pipes, and the second line's dashes and colons decide alignment for the whole column. The syntax is trivial to read and miserable to type — which makes it exactly the kind of thing to paste into a converter.
The interesting part is upstream: recognising what was pasted. A spreadsheet gives tab-separated rows; a European CSV separates with semicolons because its decimals own the comma. Counting column consistency across rows disambiguates all of it without asking you a single question.

How does it know my delimiter?
By consistency: for tab, semicolon and comma it counts how many columns each row would split into, and the delimiter that gives every row the same count wins. That is why a spreadsheet paste (tabs) beats the commas inside your numbers, and European semicolon-CSV parses correctly.
Why are the columns padded with spaces?
Markdown does not require it — but the humans reading the raw file do. A padded table reads as a table in the source, in diffs and in code review. The padding costs bytes and buys legibility, which is the right trade everywhere a README lives.
How do I set column alignment?
Pick the alignment and it lands in the separator row as colons — ---: for right, :---: for center. That is the official Markdown table syntax GitHub, GitLab and every CommonMark-tables renderer honours. Numbers usually earn right alignment; everything else reads best left.
What about a | character inside a cell?
Escaped automatically as \| — otherwise the pipe would end the cell early and shift the whole row. Newlines inside a cell are flattened to spaces, because a Markdown table cell has no way to contain a line break.
