Tip Calculator
Tip, total and everyone's share when the bill splits — at the table, in the seconds before the card machine arrives. The round-the-total option lifts the tip to the next whole number and shows the percentage it actually became, because rounding should be a choice you can see.
Three numbers before the card machine arrives
The entire calculation is one multiplication and one division, and yet it is fumbled nightly at a million tables — because it happens under social pressure with wine involved. The point of a tip calculator is not the arithmetic; it is having the three numbers — tip, total, each — settled before the machine is in your hand.
The effective-tip line exists for honesty in both directions: rounding up 47.30 to a clean 53 is a 12% tip wearing a 10% label, and you deserve to know which one you actually left.
Frequently asked questions
What is customary where?
In the US, 18–20% at table service is the wage system itself. Most of Europe runs 5–10% or rounding up over included service. In Azerbaijan a 10% service charge is often already on the bill — check the line items before adding on top; tipping over it is a courtesy, not an expectation.
Tip on the amount before or after tax and service?
On the pre-tax, pre-service amount — you are thanking the service, not the state. Where a service charge is printed, that charge usually is the tip; anything extra is for service beyond the ordinary, and it belongs in cash if you want it to reach the person.
Why does rounding adjust the tip and not the bill?
Because the bill is a fact and the tip is the variable. Rounding 52.03 up to 53 by inflating the bill would misstate what you owe; lifting the tip keeps the arithmetic honest — and the effective-percentage line shows exactly how generous the round number quietly made you.
How should an uneven split be handled?
The per-person figure here is the equal split, which is right for shared tables. When one person had the lobster, split the bill by consumption first and tip proportionally — or accept the equal split as the price of not doing accounting at dinner. Both are defensible; mixing them mid-meal is not.
